Heterogeneous IT estates including on-premises infrastructure will be with us for years to come, but hybrid is ceding ground to multicloud as the organizing principle of digital-era IT. Hybrid and multicloud are complementary and interconnected concepts, but the on-/off-premises IT paradigm is giving way to a more expansive view as organizations seek to build, operate, manage and secure workloads ‘here, there and everywhere’ with public, private and edge clouds. However, multicloud introduces even more complexity to the IT mix, making management, orchestration and integration platforms (cloud control planes) the enabling framework for continuous optimization and efficient IT operations.
The cloud operating model (both public and private) is now a mainstream feature of enterprise IT. The pandemic accelerated adoption of cloud services and reinforced the value of agile, scalable IT that can respond to changing business conditions and unexpected disruptions. As we enter the third year of living with COVID-19, organizations are taking stock of their IT estates and shifting the cloud focus from building and implementation to managing complexity through consolidation, modernization and centralized governance. Multicloud is increasingly a given, with most organizations using public cloud citing multiple vendors in use; the effective management, orchestration and cost optimization of that mix a looming priority.
