Ransomware – today’s greatest cyber threat
The increasing efforts to build an industry supporting criminals that extort organizations of their data are both pernicious and prevalent. All organizations are at risk and should prepare for the eventuality of a successful cyber-attack. The estimated cost of cyber-attacks is $5 Billion with an annual growth rate over 20%. The cost to remediate a ransomware attack is now estimated at $4 million per instance with payouts in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. This new threat wants an organization’s data as the focus of their extortion efforts. Shutting down an application can be remedied in minutes or a couple of hours by a reboot. But if the criminal can delete, steal, or encrypt user data, the impact on the organization could be days, weeks or longer if a ransom is not paid. Add to that the potential loss of reputation and revenue and the costs keep climbing.
