Supply chains… should be on every boardroom’s agenda after the events of recent years. Companies have suffered from supply chain shocks triggered by the pandemic, the Ukraine conflict, the energy crisis, the blocking of the Suez Canal, and more. Yet firms are frequently unprepared–a Deloitte survey in 2021 found that 86% of UK companies believe they need to be more resilient against supply chain risks.
Supply chains are often long and complex and it is difficult for businesses to have visibility over every stage. If a supplier is found to have carried out human rights violations, regulatory or sanctions breaches or ESG failures, this exposes a company to significant regulatory, reputational, strategic and financial risks. By contrast, firms with effective due diligence processes for current and prospective suppliers often find this gives them a competitive advantage.
