Data review: $21,767 is the average incremental cost of every hospital-acquired pressure injury
How much is each hospital-acquired pressure injury costing your facility? How much is it costing the patient?
This review of a US National Hospital Discharge database covering 9.6 million patients – 46,108 of whom were experiencing hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) – calculated the average incremental cost of a single pressure injury at nearly $22,000.
In propensity score-adjusted models, increasing HAPI severity contributed significantly to:
- Higher total unreimbursable costs
- Increased overall length of stay
- Greater risk of in-hospital mortality at the index hospitalization
- 1.5 to 2 times greater risk of 30-, 60- and 90-day readmissions
- Increasing risk of other hospital-acquired conditions, such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections and venous thromboembolism at index hospitalization
