Enterprises are increasingly driven to transform their businesses, modernize their applications and embrace cloud platforms and operating models as core to their IT systems. These motivations are driving factors in decisions about where and how organizations deploy and operate workloads across increasingly hybrid mixtures of on-premises and off-premises environments. A hybrid strategy that includes on-premises systems, hosted infrastructure and public cloud services is now the standard IT posture, with workloads being deployed according to the environments best suited to their needs. For many organizations and applications, hosted private cloud will provide the best fit for a variety of application and business requirements.
Enterprise cloud adoption and migration initiatives are typically driven by similar combinations of intended results relating to cost, performance, availability, security and agility. But these aren’t certain outcomes of cloud adoption. Rather, they are individual engineering, architectural and operational challenges that are consequently important factors in decisions about where a given workload is best deployed. Respondents to 451 Research’s Voice of the Enterprise (VotE): Cloud, Hosting & Managed Services, Workload Placement 2022 survey (See chart below) most frequently identify the needs of the application (such as performance, security, dependencies and cloud-readiness) as an influential factor in venue selection (chosen by 52%), along with privacy needs (49%), the needs of the business such as time to market, agility and cost (46%), regulatory and compliance pressures (40%) and the availability of skills (40%).
