Change in the utility world has been brewing for years, kind of like a glacier, we’ve seen it coming but it hasn’t been all that fast. And just like a glacier, the changes will dramatically change the landscape as we know it. These changes are twofold:
On the customer side
There’s an increased interest in renewable power; larger commercial and industrial (C&I) customers have more options to purchase part or all of their energy from alternate sources (grid defection); and a proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs), like rooftop solar.
On the utility side
Nearly flat load growth and capital spending requirements continue to put pressure on the existing business model.
Utilities companies must capitalize on these changes, and one way is to engage C&I companies with new insights and reveal new value from their usage data.
